‘The Acolyte’ Fight Choreography Highlighted in New Behind the Scenes Video

The official Star Wars YouTube channel has unveiled a new behind-the-scenes video showcasing the stunt work in The Acolyte. In it, the stars of the show as well as the fight coordinators discuss the work that was put in and some of the influences behind the choreography.

A particularly noteworthy quote comes from Chris Cowen the show’s 2nd Unit Director. Cowen has worked on other notable movies and shows like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and The Witcher, doing stunts and working as an assistant director. He cites the many different combat styles used in The Acolyte:

“We used Taekwondo, Karate, Krav Maga, and Western Boxing.”

Mark Ginther, the show’s stunt coordinator also has an acclaimed background, having worked on Shang-Chi and the Daredevil TV show. He too emphasizes how the show combines different fighting styles to create something unique.

“We took the heavy martial arts — the hand-to-hand combat — all the different styles, and mixed them together to build these sequences.

Carrie-Ann Moss, who plays Master Indara and whom most people will know as Trinity from The Matrix, emphasized the rigor in preparing for the show’s combat. In many of the show’s promotions, the marketing team has spotlighted Mae and Master Indara’s confrontation. Presumably, this fight sequence is early on in the show. But, Carrie-Ann Moss had a humorous comment after what we assume was right after shooting this sequence:

“Training for The Acolyte was really challenging. Today I feel a tad like a truck hit me.”

Star Wars fans have received a lot of new tidbits of information in the past few days. Even though we are less than two days away from the show’s premiere, series creator Leslye Headland teased there will be a brand new lightsaber, and she wasn’t talking about the lightwhip that Vernestra Rwoh uses. There was also a 30-second teaser featuring what we assume to be the masked villain’s voice.

The Acolyte streams on Disney Plus starting June 4. We will have a review covering the first few episodes posted on the website soon as well as a spoiler-discussion of the first two episodes.
